• MISSING GIRLS OF THE DESERT

         Written by Chandler Vaughn

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. – It was Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015. Krystie Stuart, 29 year-old Lucerne Valley resident, vanished and was never seen again.

Earlier that day, Krystie had driven to Jess Ranch Dental for a walk in appointment, but the dentist couldn’t see her.  At that time, according to the office staff, Krystie misplaced her car keys, but eventually found a spare and walked out the door.

Evidently, Krystie had plans to stay at a friends house that evening, but never arrived. According to a post on the family’s Facebook Page, “Help Find Krystie Stuart”, a bloodhound traced her scent across the street to the parking lot behind Bed Bath and Beyond. There, her scent was lost.

On March 8th, Krystie’s Dodge Dakota was located in the open desert 20 minutes north-east of Jess Ranch Dental near Fairview Valley, as the crow flies, almost directly in between State Route 18, “Happy Trails Highway”, and State Route 247.

The contents of Krystie’s car, (although not necessarily enough to indicate foul play to investigators), were disturbing and left many unanswered questions. Her eye glasses were there.  Her cell phone.  Her shoes, socks and bra.  The medication she had just picked up.  Everything was there, but not Krystie. The bloodhounds went to work again, but her scent could not be found.

NOTE***If Krystie’s scent could not be found, and she  didn’t leave her truck in the desert, then who did? And wouldn’t that (possibly) indicate foul play?

MISSING GIRLS OF THE DESERT – I’m actually starting to get angry about this “no evidence to indicate foul play” conclusion, after so many women’s vehicles have been recovered. In San Bernardino County, this conclusion is reached by default, quickly and frequently.

I appreciate and respect law enforcement officers. These are hard cases. No evidence to be found, I get it.

…BUT, THAT CERTAINLY DOESNT MEAN THAT NO FOUL PLAY WAS INVOLVED.

As I write about CASE AFTER CASE of missing women who vanish into the open desert of California, but “no foul play is suspected”, many questions arise:

    • Why would they leave their cell phones?
    • Why in the world would they ditch their cars?
    • Why leave their wallets?
    • In some cases, their beloved pets?

    In my humble opinion….THEY WOULDNT!

I assume these are the heart-sick questions their Mother’s ask every night. I often cry while writing these articles, when I think of their Moms.

It has been over 2 years since Krystie Stuart disappeared. Krystie is loved and missed desperately. Her family’s Facebook page, “Help Find Krystie Stuart” is always updated. Please like and share.

       Written by Chandler Vaughn

EARP, Calif. – Sandy Giles Still Missing from San Bernardino County, California.

SANDY GILES MISSING –  It was Mother’s Day weekend. Sandy, a 44 year-old beloved mother and resident of Maplesville, Alabama was headed home from a road trip she’d taken with a family friend.

Sadly, on May 13, 2017, Sandy Giles vanished while traveling on California’s hot and dangerous, “Twentynine Palms Highway” and was never seen again.

CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP – Sandy reportedly had some issues while on the road. In Marysville, (Northern California) she had unexpectedly left her motel room in the middle of the night with the intention of driving back to Alabama alone. It appears that she was running out of money and gas near the end of her trip as she headed toward the Mojave Desert.

Sandy called her son at 5 P.M. on May 13th from the Hi Sahara Oasis Gas Station in Essex/Fenner while adding as much fuel as she could afford.  Sandy’s family expected her home to Alabama no later than the following Monday.

Allegedly, Sandy was going to attempt to make it to the closest Walmart to receive money by wire transfer.  The closest Walmart stores to Hi Sahara Oasis are:

    • Bullhead City, Nevada- 1 hour 13 minutes
    • Parker, Arizona- 2 hours

I-40 EAST / OLD STATE ROUTE 66 – Hi Sahara Oasis is the only gas station for 100 miles on this infamous stretch of highway, also known as “Old National Trails Highway” and “Old Route 66”.

TWENTYNINE PALMS HWY – The last leg of this trip would put Sandy on State Route 62, aka. “Twentynine Palms Highway”, with the sun setting around 7:40 P.M. that evening.

I-10 EAST – It seems likely that Sandy was planning to take the “southern route”, Interstate 10 EAST, back to Alabama, which might be why she went south to Parker despite the longer distance.

MISSING PERSON – Sandy Giles’ call from Hi Sahara Oasis was the last call she made.  On May 16th, Sandy’s 2013 Dodge Avenger was found partially high-center on a sand wash, just outside of Earp, California.

COLORADO RIVER – The micro-town of Earp, (named after lawman Wyatt Earp), lies just across the Colorado River from Parker, a short 2 or 3 miles from Walmart.

SANDY GILES MISSING PERSON – All Sandy’s belongings were locked in the vehicle, including her purse, clothing, cell phone and asthma inhaler.  The only thing missing was Sandy herself and the car keys. It is still unknown if Sandy’s car was out of gas (again) or if she ran off the road accidently into the wash and got stuck.

MOJAVE DESERT – After searching the roadside area thoroughly, her family personally recovered Sandy’s flip flop sandals about 20 yards down “Twentynine Palms Highway” near a patch of sage brush. There were a few bare footprints in the desert sand, but nothing else.

MISSING PERSON SEARCH – In late May, a search party of volunteers gathered at the Earp Post Office to search the area again, but found no trace of Sandy Giles.

    SANDY GILES DESCRIPTION:

    • Caucasian Female
    • Missing From Earp, California
    • Date Missing: May 13, 2017
    • Age: 44
    • Height: 5’7″

    JANUARY BLAITHWAITE’S SUSPICIOUS DEATH

         Written by Chandler Vaughn

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – It was a Friday in the city of San Bernardino, December 9, 2016.  The autumn-winter sun set early that evening, just before 5 P.M.

JANUARY BLAITHWAITE- January Lynn Blaithwaite, 35, grabbed her cell phone, stepped out the front door of her Mom’s house to smoke a cigarette and vanished.

The first sign of trouble was January’s cell phone, located outside on the walkway, smashed into bits.  January was nowhere to be found.

BODY FOUND ON 210 FREEWAY– Sadly, later that night, January was found on California’s State Route 210, also known as the “Foothill Freeway”. A passer-by saw her in the west-bound lane and called 911, but it was too late.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH – December 9, 2016, January Blaithwaite, beloved Daughter, Sister and Mother of three was pronounced dead at the scene.

It has been assumed that January was likely hit by a car.  That may have been what  ended her life, but doesn’t explain how or why  January was on the freeway, 5 miles from home in the first place; and why her phone was found smashed.

It is unknown what happened the night January Braithwaite was killed, but it seems that foul play could be involved.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SHERIFF – If you have any information regarding the suspicious death of January Blaithwaite, please call:

SACRAMENTO, Calif.– Article: “Ryan Roberts Wrongful Conviction”.

RYAN ROBERTS– It’s ridiculous to think that a person could end up in prison for murder simply because he smoked a few cigarettes at a local ballpark and then left the butts on the ground. In the case of Ryan Roberts, convicted of murdering Sacramento teen, Jessica Funk-Haslam, this may have been all that happened, thanks to questionable use of California’s Prop 69.

SACRAMENTO TEEN MURDERED – In the interest of truth and justice, and the safety of our community, please imagine yourself in this position:

    • What if (at a public park) someone picks up your discarded cigarette butts and re-lights them…leaving their DNA mixed with yours?
    • What if that same person…is found dead in the park later that night?
    • What if you have an explanation for your cigarette butts/DNA being found at the park (crime scene), but detectives don’t believe you? What if the jury doesn’t?

RYAN ROBERTS WRONGFUL CONVICTION- To tell the story of Ryan Robert’s wrongful conviction, I must first tell you the story of a beautiful Sacramento teen, Jessica Funk-Haslam and her violent murder. To tell Jessica’s story, I must also tell of two Lawless relatives, two brothers: Reed and Thomas, and a man named Johnny Richardson.

JESSICA FUNK-HASLAM MURDER- If you can’t see a meaningful connection between Ryan Roberts and Jessica Funk-Haslam, or understand a motive, you’re not alone, it’s because there isn’t oneRemembering that, let me start from the beginning of this nightmare, March 6, 2012.

THE BODY / THE MURDER- On March 6, 2012 a woman jogging through Sacramento’s Rosemont Park discovered the dead body of a young girl inside a baseball dugout. The girl was determined to be 13 year-old Jessica Funk Haslam, a somewhat rebellious teen, who was last seen alive the night before, with friend, Savannah Lawless.

Jessica Funk-Haslam had been violently murdered. Strangled. Bludgeoned. Stabbed in the neck.

SACRAMENTO CO. SHERIFF– Sheriff’s investigators were called to the scene. Evidence was collected, questions were asked, video footage obtained. Slowly, a story (with motive and witnesses) began to emerge. A story that would later be recanted.

…A story that had NOTHING to do with Ryan Roberts.

ROSEMONT PARK- As the original story goes, Jessica Funk-Haslam left home the afternoon of her murder, against the wishes of her mother, Tara Haslam. Allegedly, Jessica ended up at Rosemont Park with a new friend named Savannah Lawless who lived nearby with her mother, Christina Lawless, at a dodgy motel called Vince’s. The sun set around six o’clock that evening, March 5, 2012.

CHRIS REED WITNESS STATEMENT- The details of the night started taking shape in a statement made by Chris Reed, a friend of Savanna’s mother, Christina.

Allegedly, that evening, Savannah called her mom, who then handed the phone to Chris Reed. Chris Reed stated that Savannah asked for help and asked him to bring a blanket to the park. According to his original statement, by the time Chris Reed arrived at the park, there were already three individuals standing near Jessica’s body:

    1. Savannah Lawless
    2. Christina Lawless
    3. Johnny Richardson

Chris Reed further stated there were two other people standing by.

CHRIS REED/JOHNNY THOMAS RECANT- Chris Reed told the account of what happened to his brother, Johnny Thomas. Both brothers made official statements containing the three names mentioned above. Then, they literally scratched out the names and changed the statements to say “two girls and a guy”.

At trial, the two statements were recanted entirely, with no explanation.

Here are a few other details about Savannah Lawless and Chris Reed that should be considered…

    • Savannah Lawless was given immunity for her testimony.
    • Originally, and allegedly, Savannah Lawless implicated Chris Reed as having been with Jessica the night before.
    • Chris Reed was captured on video in the motel parking lot carrying a blanket under his left arm, as indicated in his recanted statement.
    • Chris Reed allegedly laundered the blanket before returning it.
    • Chris Reed was subpoenaed to testify, pled the 5th, (refused to answer on the grounds of self-incrimination) and was released from the subpoena…on his statement it says very clearly that he was afraid to testify because he feared he’d be charged with Jessica’s murder.

SAVANNAH LAWLESS – Part of the story revealed at trial by defense witness, Michelle Serrao, placed Savannah Lawless with Jessica in a confrontation on the night in question. Michelle testified that upon hearing of Jessica’s murder, Savannah screamed “All I did was just beat her up!”.

LAWLESS TEEN– An important fringe detail that was ignored by investigators was the friendship between the two girls. Savannah Lawless was a new friend to Jessica of just a few months. You’ve heard the term “mean girls”?  By many accounts Savannah was allegedly quite abusive and once slapped Jessica so hard it knocked her hat off. It has also been alleged that Savannah left several angry voicemails for Jessica just two days before her murder.

FUNK-HASLAM WITH LAWLESS- In summary, Savannah Lawless was allegedly the last person Jessica was with at Rosemont Park and admitted to beating her up on the same night she was killed. Witness statements indicate that Chris Reed, Johnny Richardson and Christina Lawless may have played a part in this crime.

VERONICA MARTINNEZ– In January 1992, a young California citizen named Veronica Martinez left her home to go grocery shopping and was never seen alive again. Very few facts are known about what actually happened to Veronica that day in 1992 over twenty years ago, but what has been released to the public is horrific.

BODY FOUND– The following is written with great sadness. Veronica’s remains were found two months later in early March, a few miles north of Cool, California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Veronica had been murdered and dumped onto an embankment off of State Hwy 49 that runs along the American River. The fact that a 19 year old, pregnant mother of two had been murdered was terrible enough, but Veronica had been decapitatedIt was unspeakable.

UNSOLVED MURDER– This unsolved murder has been under publicized. While details of a case must be kept classified to insure the integrity of an investigation, it simultaneously allows the local citizens to remain uninformed and unaware of ongoing danger that may be present in their community.  In addition, this crime took place such a long time ago that many residents feel a false sense of security or have never even heard of it.

TRUE CRIME CALIFORNIA– The questions regarding this case abound. Was it someone Veronica knew who tried to conceal her identity? Is it possible her killer is still at large in California? It is. Always take caution. Be Safe California.

EL DORADO COUNTY SHERIFF– If you have information relating to the Veronica Martinez case please contact the El Dorado Co. Sheriffs Office at 530-621-5655.

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of beloved California citizen, Veronica Martinez. True Crime California will continue to post updates until her killer is brought to face the full force of justice. True Love Never Dies.
